Brave New World
Seminar reflection
I think that the main message of BNW is that you can't force people to be happy. I also think that a smaller message was that to be happy and stable you have to give some things up. The fact that they had to take drugs to be happy just proves that they're not actually happy
BNW has made me think of happiness as something that we need to make sure we hold onto while it last, because you can get it artificially but it's not the same. I also think that the more purpose you have in your life the happier we are going to be. I see this in my life because when I am working that is when I am the most happy.
I think that John is saying that there is no personal cost to essay things. The norm for John is personal sacrifice to achieve your goal, this is the opposite than the norm is in BNW. I think that is part of why he was so sad in civilization.
I think that all the the consumer part of our society are for our comfort and the things like books, movies, and high art can for the most part be about truth and beauty. The fact that I can now order all of my groceries on line goes to prove that we are going to eventually going to be like the people in idiocracy, which is all about comfort. For truth and beauty there is a reason that we still like Shakespeare.

Seminar Reflection
This comment was made by Gus Kid “John enjoyed authentic relations.” I really agree with this statement, John the savage from Brave new world who ended up killing himself. This comment was made while we were talking about why he killed himself. We came to the conclusion that he killed himself because he wanted authentic emotions and the brave new world does not have anything authentic in it.
In this seminar I feel that I have groan in my seminar leadership, this is one that I struggled with last time. I feel that I did much better at this than I did last time. I also enjoyed this one much more, I found this topic much more interesting to discuss.
The key take away is that you can't make people happy, and you need to experience tragedy, pain, and sadness to really know what happiness is. This is something that I will not forget because I when I experience all of things that will make me appreciate happiness.
